Wed, 27 Jul 2005 Jim recounts a rather disturbing tale that is both more and less disturbing because it happens thousands of times a day here in NYC. Just wait till we get our national ID cards! Indeed. Following up on my earlier post, I just got an email from a University I've worked for in the past. They JUST FINISHED TESTING WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2. Obviously this is partly a reflection on the IT department, but its also a reflection on how overly complicated and potentially system-frying XP SP2 is. I didn't install it until I felt like I had to for the security patches, and it actually did cause a problem (which isn't worth getting into, but it's still happening and it is annoying as hell). Bottom line: monolithic operating system, very overly complex, not so safe for my system, and there are other options. It's on me to switch though.

This can't be true. Okay, it could be. But it's too weird.
Windows Vista early impressions
Testers begin to unravel secrets of Windows Vista
You know what I think? It doesn't matter. The more time goes on, the more I want to dump Windows. There's just too much work to do to keep it from hosing your system. I switch browsers, that browser becomes insecure. I update the OS with security patches, a new one is out the next day. Linux at least isn't as much of a target. This is a good playlist: - Lee Perry, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, CatPower, more. As part of their tenth anniversary, CNET is posting a bunch of top ten lists (original idea!) and here's a list of the top 10 of 1995. Includes my favorite laptop, the IBM Thinkpad 701c with its butterfly keyboard, which you can get on eBay |
