Que es?
The Weblog of Brett Singer. Bringing the world what it needs most - a blog.
Note: Sorry about all of the 'hot deals' entries (someone referred to this blog as
CorporateShill.com).
The deals and things are being fed into Multineedia.com. We will
soon move the deals category over to Multineedia so you don't have to read it, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Podcasting = Timeshifting?
Prentiss Riddle is blogging his Webjay experiences, which is GREAT. He says something about podcasting that's not quite right (at least, I don't think it's right):
Item: Podcasting is the practice of automatically downloading audio from an RSS feed into your iPod or other MP3 player. The name is confusing as the kind of MP3 player doesn't matter; what's important is that podcasting lets you time-shift audio the way a Tivo or other DVR (or a VCR for that matter) lets you time-shift TV. Tell your "podcatcher" the RSS feeds to watch and it will grab any audio they link to and save it in your player for you.
Time-shifting is capturing live audio or video for later playback, or pausing a live broadcast, rewinding and fast-forwarding it, that sort of thing. Podcasting is downloading static tracks (at least, I think that's what it is).
The Webjay comments are fairly detailed, check 'em out.

Novell Vs. WinWord
More on the Novell/MS thing from ZDNet:
DAVID BERLIND
Novell vs. WinWord: One key to the kingdom that Microsoft won't let go
The footnote to last week's Microsoft-Novell settlement is the
two companies' failure to find common ground regarding WordPerfect's
fall from grace. Why, instead of settling all Novell matters as it
has recently settled with so many other companies, did Microsoft
dig its heels in on Word for Windows? One reader's theory: it could
be "precedent." If Microsoft has plans to sue, say, Red Hat, any
capitulation to Novell over WinWord could be viewed as an admission
that Redmond's intellectual property in Office was an illegal monopoly
control point rather than a proprietary technology that Microsoft
should be allowed to protect.

One Playlist Ends, Another Begins
So I'm listening to this playlist (Testify for Condi Rice, in honor of her new job, g-d help us all), and it finishes. Just then I'm looking at Lucas' blog, where he mentions this site which I had mentioned on this page. So I went there and saw this playlist of ic-musicmedia's Top 20 songs (even indy music sites have charts! Perhaps it makes them feel legitimate?), and I played it. It's vaguely pleasant in not-too-distracting kind of way, although it is sort of giving me a headache. Anyway, the point is that I bounced from playlist to playlist to satisfy my music listening jones. The is coming, and I don't have to download a thing.
